Nothing new on the Interzone front, but the Perth scene moves forward nevertheless. I've decided to slash the New Music, Club Reviews and Music Programs sections of junk:mail, because nobody's sending me anything, and I don't have time to write the stuff myself. If you get keen and want to express an opinion or two, please mail me. Thus far, nobody has. Bastards. Cya, JEREMY (Jeremy G Byrne) NEWS & VIEWS---------------------------------------------------------------- EMAS: ----- The University of Western Australia has spawned a new club dedicated to music, chemistry and having a good time (well, that's probably not in the Consititution, but I'm extrapolating for accuracy). The Electronic Music Appreciation Society (seriously) has already run a couple of successful events, and intend to do far more. The first of these took place at the incredibly dubious venue within the twisted bowels of Raggabone Records in Barrack Street, and featured Sensory Overload playing their music-of-the-spheres in a breezy little attic while gabba and hardcore pumped and pounded in the basement, for those who could find that door marked "Beware of the Leopard". It was BYO oxygen in the dungeons, and the six flights of stairs were, well, a tripping hazard, but the event showed the potential of the concept, and the local police were suitably entertained by that sartorially-frugal "girl in the glitter" who seems intent on taking the tiara-as-high-fashion look of today's under-14s to its extreme. The second, decidedly better-located event took place on April 27 at the UWA Refectory. The evening saw performances from LD120, Sensory Overload and CSU--although the latter's 4:00am performance was cut short by the closure of the venue for security reasons--along with "Atro Boy" Adrian and a number of fine amateur DJs from that branch of music we like to pigeonhole as "techno". The four roboscans plus strobe barely filled the space, but the big video screen, smoke machine and excellent Turbosound system made the event look and sound quite professional. Sensory Overload was the big hit of the night, and their CD is eagerly awaited. EMAS are considering running events at Dominion in the future (see below), and it's likely that this organisation will eventually take on the mantle of "Clan Perth"--if they last long enough. Dominion Social Club: --------------------- Dominion are open again, running just about fortnightly (still Saturday Nights from 8:00PM, 158 William Street, along the very dangerous-looking alleyway, through some worrying rubble and down a set of precipitous stairs sure to entertain the gravitationally and psychedelically challenged alike). They assure me that "permenancy is just around the corner" after their cause was championed in the Perth City Council by a friendly councillor (who referred to them as "Gothics" and made some amusingly misinformed statments about the subculture, as reported in the local Business paper). When this occurs (and nobody can decide that people dressed in black are far too aesthetically challenged for the streets of Perth), the intention is to run a series of other nightclub events, with a techno-oriented club run by an ex-Melbournite to be first cab off the rank. Dominion has grown steadily (they now have upwards of 400 members), with extra bits of decor, furniture etc. creeping in, although the "dancefloor" remains an area of concrete with an unfortunate propensity for crippling the over-excited and the music still tends to drift into repetitions of second-rate Goth covers and bland industro-buzz as the night wears on. Still, it's the best in Perth by far. Remember, this is a members & guests-only club, so try to latch onto a regular or call Mike on 061 (09) 381 9252 for details. LIES------------------------------------------------------------------------ Real Pogs: ---------- Wednesday, May 1 (the night _after_ Walpurgisnacht, sadly), saw a promotion for one of the current swathe of Vampire flix "Nadja" at, of all places, the ultra-mainstream Post Office nightclub in Northbridge. Partially sponsored by Alysian Empire, the event sadly failed to capitalise on the amusing (though only locally-relevant) pog connection. Alysian Empire _should_ have put out a limited edition "Post Office Goth" t-shirt. Wayne's World: -------------- Everyone's favourite DJ has been on the move again. Having abandoned Tardis (his Friday Night at the Firm) to Adrian, Friday May 3rd saw DJ Wayne make another attempt to regain his dignity in "the large room behind DCs", a venue with comparatively few pretensions and a new paintjob which probably didn't help his cause (the walls are now, apparently, white). According to one brave soul who ventured out in sympathy, the event was not a big success (she stayeyed for less than half an hour). Where to next, one wonders? Gobbles? Blacklungsnogthing: ------------------- Not content with his recent Planet-smashing, Dave Thrussel is apparently heading our way again in the near future. No details yet, but the scrabble for the support spot is underway. IZ STUFF-------------------------------------------------------------------- Into the Interzone: ------------------- Well, these days Interzone burns brightest in the dataflow. With the club in hibernation, our electronic presence is about all we can offer. For those of you with more time than sense, here are Interzone's online details in one handy reference: E-MAIL: interzone@midnight.com.au LISTSERV: netslave@midnight.com.au (for info/subs/help re. the List) MAILING LIST: junkmail@midnight.com.au (for posting to the whole List) WWW: http://www.midnight.com.au/interzone/ --------------------------------POSTSCRIPT---------------------------------- junkmail@midnight.com.au: Interzone's Electronic Mailing List This wonder of modern technology waits--humming and buzzing weirdly to itself in the perpetual darkness of midnight.com.au--to serve all your postal needs (well, to distribute your messages to the all the subscribers to the Mailing List and JUNK:MAIL anyhow). There are two components to the Mailing List: the List itself (the email address where you can send stuff for automagical distribution to all those deserving folx out there) and the List Server (the email address where you can send administrative commands to get on or off the list, to find out how many people are on it, get help about it and eventually retreive files from it). The List is "junkmail@midnight.com.au" and the List Server is "netslave@midnight.com.au". Don't get these confused, or you'll look like a complete bunny. How do you use it? Well, it's no more complex than programming your VCR! o TO SUBSCRIBE: Post to netslave@midnight.com.au with "SUBSCRIBE [address] junkmail" (where [address] is the email address of the person you wish to add to the Mailing List) as the body of the message (don't put anything else in there, including your .sig!) o TO UNSUBSCRIBE: Post to netslave@midnight.com.au with "UNSUBSCRIBE [address] junkmail" (where [address] is the email address of the person you wish to zap from the Mailing List) as the body of the message. o TO GET HELP: Post to netslave@midnight.com.au with "HELP" in the body of the message. This will return a complete list of wonderful things that the List Server can do for you (which I won't go into here). Note that junkmail@ is not the only List that netslave@ handles. o TO SPREAD THE WORD: Anything and everything you post to junkmail@midnight.com.au will be duplicated and posted back to everyone on the Mailing List. Please don't abuse this: there are folx out there paying for bandwidth! At some stage in the future there may be a need to establish a separate list for JUNK:MAIL subscribers who do not wish to receive all the postings to the junkmail@ list. If you feel you fall into this category, please post to interzone@midnight.com.au and we'll try to work something out. Incidentally, "Junk" was the Interzone Magazine, which has yet to see the light of day. Until it does, JUNK:MAIL will just have to suffice. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
