The original motivation for the opening of Interzone was the closure of another Perth nightclub: The (Inner City) Firm. The Firm, whilst far from cutting-edge in its music and less than inspiring in its decor, lighting and atmosphere, filled the role of Alternative Music Nightclub in the CBD. When it closed, there was no longer anywhere to go which played anything vaguely resembling Alternative Dance music. Interzone had to open.
The Firm closed its doors in mid 1993. Planning began in ernest for Interzone in late 1993. As can be seen from the timeline, Interzone ran its first night on March 18, 1994. The original intention was that Interzone would run bi-weekly, moving to weekly within a month or so, then multiple nights per week as soon as three or four months. The venue were obviously keen not to disrupt their lucrative night-trading unless the nightclub was to prove successful, thus the cautious approach. After three hugely successful nights, Interzone was suddenly paralysed by Town Council bureaucracy -- the Planning and Health sections decided to stop allocating us Temporary Public Building licences -- and we had to go through the incredibly labourious and very expensive process of upgrading the Public Building status of the venue. At this point, the formal business structure of the club became an issue, and a couple of months were lost in contract negotiations, company formation etc. This took us until about June 1994, and obtaining an Accomodation Notice for a reasonable number of patrons took a further four months.
Interzone re-opened on November 19, 1994 (following a three week advertising lead-up), and has run weekly on Saturday Night ever since. We've had a few special events on other nights, tried a Thursday Night once (very short notice, poorly advertised) and have run three Wednesday nights as non-Industrial specials, but the Saturday night constitutes "Interzone proper".

UPDATE:
Interzone held its "Terminal Birthday Party" on March 18, 1995. Since then, despite planned end-of-1995 events, the club has not run.
